Pinelands High School | Biodiversity Garden

Description

We started this planting this garden in 2017 as a learning space for students at Pinelands High School. The initial focus was on locally indigenous monocots, dicots, and gymnosperms for Grade 11 Life Sciences lessons. The garden has grown to include a small patch of "forest", "useful plants" section, "extinction" section with threatened species and a "Cape Flats" bed with local endemics planted. The turf areas are designated no-mow for most of spring and pollinators are increasingly visiting the garden. We are documenting the biodiversity of the school here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/pinelands-high-school-biodiversity and a large amount of the endemic species are centred in the Biodiversity Garden. We are hoping to continue to add more locally indigenous plants to act as a stepping stone for pollinators in the area.
